Skiing in Innsbruck
Innsbruck hosted the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976. So it knows how to do winter sports right. Indeed, the 9 major ski areas surrounding the town host over 25 village resorts which collectively offer over 500km of trails for skiers and snowboarders and 96km of trails for hikers.
Relive the most famous ski race of all time (Franz Klammer’s descent down Patscherkofl in the 1976 Winter Olympics). Take a 115kph descent on the Olympic bobsleigh run.
Or, just ski down the lovely pistes beneath the Kalkkögel mountains. There are tons of options for every skill level, from Olympic-level expert to just-getting-started beginner.
In addition, there are several snowboard parks in the area; the ones at Axamer Lizum and the Stubai Glacier have half-pipes, natural jumps, and a snowboard racecourse.

Facilities in Innsbruck
Innsbruck may be known as a ski town, but it’s also an 800-year-old city that’s home to over 100,000 people. That means everything is abundant; accommodation, restaurants, bars, and even resorts themselves – there are 9 ski areas surrounding Innsbruck that are all reachable in under an hour from the city centre.
There are all kinds of food & drink for you in Innsbruck. You can choose to dine in one of the cheap but tasty mountain restaurants or venture back into the city for an eclectic mix of local & international cuisine. And there’s no shortage of bars, or classier cocktail spots if that’s more what you’re in to.
As a city that’s over 8 centuries old, Innsbruck’s hotels have heritage. The 4-star Goldener Adler once hosted Mozart, Wagner, Goethe, and Sartre. Hotel Weisses Kreuz is a 500-year-old hotel in the historic district of the city where Mozart lived as a child. If you’d prefer to sleep closer to the slopes, there are also plenty of hotels near the ski areas.
Given the sheer size of Innsbruck and its 9 surrounding ski areas, you might expect there to be many options for ski school. You’d be right. There are over 20 ski schools in Innsbruck to teach you everything from regular skiing to freestyle, telemarking, split-boarding, cross-country, and ice-climbing.
