Skiing in St Anton
St Anton am Arlberg, is situated in the western part of the Austrian Tyrol region.
St Anton am Alberg has always been well known for its natural beauty, reliable snowfall and the excellent condition of the slopes.
A St Anton ski pass also covers the entire Alberg ski area. The large networked lift system includes the neighbouring resorts of St Christoph and Stuben and the pass also covers the resorts of Lech and Zurs.
St Anton village may lay low, but skiing in the Alberg isn’t, there’s good range of skiing from 1200m to almost 3000m.
The terrain is grassy and pastoral below 2000m, so there’s no real need for a large snow base to make the runs skiable. Well over a metre of snow is needed to cover the rocks above the tree line. Early on in the season, lower resorts are likely to have more runs open.
Skiing in December, January and February can be freezing, especially above 2000 metres. This isn’t ideal skiing conditions for adults, let alone children. Therefore, the ability to ski lower, especially below the tree line and out of the wind is important.
Snowfall in St Anton is determined primarily by weather systems from the east, Siberia and further beyond. St Anton am Alberg usually gets the snow before resorts in the west of the Alps and local weather systems mean that St Anton is frequently inundated by snow.
